A prosthetic knee unit is integral to every trans femoral (above knee) prosthesis.
The function of the prosthetic knee is to mimic the flexion and extension (bending and straightening) of an anatomical knee joint as the amputee mobilizes. In tandem with a prosthetic foot, the knee works to support the amputee while providing a smooth economical gait.
An amputee relies on the prosthetic knee joint for stability as they ambulate. To provide stability the knee needs to be either inherently stable or locked when walking.
Many variations of the basic joint have been designed; from simple hinges to self aware computer controlled knees. Clinical Prosthetists are trained to understand the different types of knees. Their expertise is critical when assisting amputees and their caregivers decide which knee will maximize the amputee’s potential.
